The story is told from the perspective of the protagonist, Lucy Snowe. At 22, she's an orphan with no relatives, no friends, no roof over her head, and no money. Nothing holds her in England, so she moves to Labacourt, a fictional kingdom based on Belgium. After starting a job as a governess at a boarding school, she rises to become an English teacher. All seems well, but Lucy suffers from loneliness, having made no friends. Over time, it turns out that the doctor treating the girls at the boarding school is Dr. John Graham Bretton, an old acquaintance of Lucy's; his mother is her godmother. Now, communication and love enter her life.
Reading the novel "Villette," we seem to hear not the voice of the protagonist, Lucy Snowe, but that of Charlotte Brontë herself. Lucy has experienced tragedy, and it seemed as if a circle of loneliness was closing in around her, but the trials made her strong and resilient.
