"The Saga of Thidrek of Bern" is a monument of early medieval Germanic epic poetry and a unique source for Russian history. Along with the Hun leader Attila and the Goth ruler Thidrek, based on the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great, this saga features the Russian knight Ilya and the Russian king Vladimir. It also features King Vilkin, whose country was located where, at the time the saga was written, Svealand, Götaland, Skåne, and Zealand were located—that is, in present-day southern Sweden, the Danish island of Zealand, and the southern Baltic coast. This source is particularly important for Russian history because some scholars identify the Russian king Vladimir in this saga with Prince Vladimir Vseslavich Krasnoe Solnyshko, a hero of Russian epics, thus reconstructing a broad canvas of Russian history in the 5th century.
This complete translation of "The Saga of Thidrek of Bern" is published in Russian for the first time. The translation was based on the original in Old Norse, which has been preserved on ancient parchment in the Royal Library of Sweden in Stockholm.
