The novels "Sweet and Honorable" and "Nothing But Hope" complete Yuri Slepukhin's extensive tetralogy about World War II, which many call the "War and Peace" of the 20th century. Like his previous novels ("Crossroads" and "Darkness at Noon"), they are based on personal experience. The action in "Sweet and Honorable" takes place in Germany. The narrative centers on the "Generals' Conspiracy" of 1944, the assassination attempt on Hitler, and the attempted coup d'état. Although the war is depicted almost exclusively through the eyes of the Germans, a significant portion of the plot is devoted to the fates of the "Eastern workers" forcibly removed from the USSR. Among them is the heroine of "Crossroads," Lyudmila Zemtseva, whose chance encounter with one of the conspirators—a Wehrmacht officer—develops into a profound, powerful love.

The novel "Nothing But Hope" tells the story of the final stages of the war and the collapse of the Third Reich; for the first time in Soviet literature, it describes the lives of "Ostarbeiters" (to which the Slepukhin family belonged) in German labor camps. The novel unexpectedly converges the fates of its characters, who were driven by the war from romantic expectations to the realization of a merciless reality that destroyed everything but hope.
