One of the most important novels of our time, which entered the postwar canon of European literature, was first published in 1959. Its hero is the "little man" Oskar Macerath, whose childhood falls on the years of the birth of National Socialism. Realizing the absurdity of reality, he decides to stop growing up and refuses to become an adult. His constant companion is a tin drum: by beating a rhythm on it, Oskar expresses his attitude to his surroundings. Ruthless, sarcastic and at the same time perceptive view of the observer "from below" shows life in the Third Reich, the atmosphere of the world of ordinary people, generating indifference to the ever-increasing terrible evil. The novel, in a grotesque form reflected the history of Germany in the XX century, brought its author international fame.
