"You're the only creature with free will! How do you like that?" These are the lines Dwayne Hoover reads in a novel by science fiction writer Kilgore Trout, a recurring character in Vonnegut's works and a sort of alter ego for the writer. Hoover decided that this question was addressed specifically to him (in fact, the question was intended for anyone who opened the book) and that he was the only person on the planet with free will, the only one who could think and feel, while everyone else around him was just spineless and soulless robots. This thought nearly drove him mad. A car salesman of no particular intellect, Dwayne Hoover unexpectedly turns out to be a remarkable conduit for Kilgore Trout's ideas.
In this astonishing philosophical book, which satirizes the modern, insane world and the absurdity and cruelty of human misdeeds, fantasy and reality, madness and logic, author and hero, the real and the false, truth and fiction merge. Breakfast of Champions is one of Vonnegut's most important books, which the writer gave himself for his fiftieth birthday. In 1999, the novel was adapted into a film, with Bruce Willis playing the role of Dwayne Hoover.
