Kenneth Clark (1903-1983) was a British writer, historian, major specialist in art history, and an individual almost unique in twentieth-century art history. The youngest of the directors of London's National Gallery, which he headed from 1934 to 1945, Clark established himself early as a respected scholar. But the idea of art history as knowledge for a select few was alien to him, so among the special works in Kenneth Clark's extensive legacy is the then unique series of documentaries Civilization (1969-1970), the scripts of which were later published in book form. The collection Look at the Paintings is also addressed by the author not only to connoisseurs of art, but also to those seeking help and guidance. In sixteen essays, the venerable scholar, with his inherent incredible erudition and gentle humor, guides his readers through the path that his own eye and sophisticated mind follow when looking at a painting. The purpose of this exercise is to show how much there is to see after the amateur rapture has passed.
