Alois Riegl (1858–1905) was an Austrian art historian, one of the classics of the discipline, and the creator of an original form of formalism and theory of the development of the Baroque. His lectures on the origins of the Roman Baroque, delivered between 1898 and 1902 at the University of Vienna and subsequently revised for publication, opened new horizons in the field. In his approach to style, its interpretation, and periodization, Riegl offered a different perspective than Heinrich Wölfflin and his other contemporaries: by situating the beginning of a new artistic era in Michelangelo's mature style of the 1520s, he saw the Baroque not as a decline, as had previously been believed, but as the beginning of modern "subjective" art. Translated into Russian for the first time, this book is full of insightful observations on painting, sculpture, and architecture from Michelangelo to Caravaggio.
