A new work by renowned American Slavic historian Paul Bushkovich examines the cultural and historical context of the appearance in 16th-century Russia of the translation of "The History of the Destruction of Troy," written by the Sicilian Guido delle Colonne in the 13th century. Among the readers of this work, based on classical literature and mythology, was Tsar Ivan IV: he is mentioned in particular in his first letter to his political opponent, Prince Andrei Kurbsky. The full text of "The History" was subsequently included in the Illustrated Chronicle, one of the most famous literary monuments of late medieval Russia. The author explores how "The History" was created in Italy and its translations prepared in Novgorod and Moscow. The appearance of this translation in the Muscovite state symbolized a new and important moment in the history of religious culture in pre-Petrine Rus', associated with the appropriation of the canons of secular literature of the Western Middle Ages. Paul Bushkovich is an American Slavic historian.
