Contrary to popular belief, scalping is not an Indian invention at all. Colonizers from England gave a wide scope to this, so to speak, procedure. The scalp served as a means of strict accountability and a kind of receipt for money. In 1720 for each scalp paid up to a hundred pounds.
The English, who settled in America, saw the Indians not as people, but as beasts, by pure misunderstanding living on the lands intended for the white man. Several theoretical works were even published in the colonies on this subject, painting the Indians as animals from which it was a godly deed to cleanse the land. And they did... These are the origins of conservative British morality.
