In 1345, China fell under the brutal Mongol invaders. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness was a thing found only in legend. The eighth son of the Zhu family, Zhu Chongba, was prophesied to have a great destiny, while the intelligent and capable second daughter was destined for obscurity.

However, after a bandit attack left two children orphaned, it was Zhu Chongba who fell into despair and died. To escape her own death, the girl assumed her brother's name and identity. She entered a monastery as a novice and, driven by a burning desire to survive, learned that she was capable of anything to escape the prophesied future. After the sanctuary was destroyed for supporting a rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu seized her last chance and claimed a different destiny—her brother's greatness.
