Denis Beznosov's novel "Evidence of Habitat" is a polyphonic meditation on catastrophe and totalitarianism. A chorus of voices, woven from monologues, streams of consciousness, newsreels, and propaganda videos, chronicles the history of destruction. Real events are pushed to their limits, and events conflict with conventional logic. The world in a state of catastrophe appears fragmented, and the reader is forced to piece together a picture of the whole. The text features real characters—documentary filmmaker Ivens, artists Gerhard and Klein, aging actor Buster K., and furniture designer Wegner. But its primary focus is the polylogue of four nameless individuals trapped inside, deprived of the opportunity to ever leave their shelter.
