Thelonious Elliott's novels received some attention from critics, but his writing career stalled. His latest novel was rejected by 17 publishers, and he struggled to break into the upper echelons of the literary community. He watches with irritation and resentment as a novel about African-American life, written by a woman who once visited relatives in Harlem for a few days, becomes a bestseller. As if in retaliation, Elliott writes his own novel about the ghetto, which he has no intention of publishing, but a publisher buys it, and it becomes a smash bestseller.

"Erasure" served as the basis for the film "American Fiction," which won an Oscar and a BAFTA in 2024.
