Nagai Kafu (1879-1959) is one of the most famous Japanese writers of the "new age". Interest in his personality and work has not waned in Japan to this day, and his major books have been translated into all European languages. "Rivals" - this is perhaps the most vivid in all Japanese literature description of the life of geisha "era of electricity and telephones." Nagai Kafu perfectly knew his heroines in life - for a while he was even married to a famous geisha. Until the last days of his long life Kafu remained a regular in the world of entertainment, but geisha were for him not only the best conversationalists and not only the most desirable women. He saw them as keepers of a special layer of Japanese urban culture, and he felt himself an heir to a centuries-old tradition, a singer of the "world of willows and flowers," as they called in China and Japan entertainment districts.
