Valentin Petrovich Kataev, a Russian writer and playwright, lived through the Great Patriotic War and knew firsthand the grief it brought to our country, depriving thousands of children of their childhood. In 1944, Kataev wrote the novel "Son of the Regiment"—a vivid, truthful account of the difficult fate of Vanya Solntsev, who lost his family during the war. Serving in an artillery regiment, this twelve-year-old boy fought alongside adult soldiers. He defended his land from the Nazi invaders, displaying courage, heroism, selflessness, and, undoubtedly, love for his homeland. The book also includes short stories by V.P. Kataev dedicated to the Great Patriotic War.
