In our country, memoirs about the Great Patriotic War were written, as a rule, by major military leaders, Heroes of the Soviet Union and other prominent participants. At the same time, there are not many memoirs of ordinary soldiers who risked their lives every second on the front line, who endured all the hardships of life at the front, who returned to action again and again after wounds. Their view of the war is strikingly different from the views of marshals and generals, as it notices and unflattering details, but without it the truth about the war will never be complete.
Among such honest and unsophisticated soldier's memoirs is the book by N.F. Tankov, an armored gunner and artilleryman, thrice wounded, who had traveled the hard road from Bryansk to Königsberg.
