The Tale of the Adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym is the only completed novel by the progenitor of thrillers, Edgar Allan Poe. The author himself tried to pass it off as a real document, because the novel begins as an ordinary narrative of sea adventures. The more strange and frightening are the further events that lead to the soon ending, imbued with the horror of the inexplicable. Although critics called the novel a "failure" during the author's lifetime, it became Poe's most translated work. It was translated into French by Charles Baudelaire. Another Frenchman, Jules Verne, wrote a sequel to the novel called The Ice Sphinx. Herbert Wells called "The Tale of..." one of three books that particularly struck his childhood imagination. Howard Lovecraft's "Ridges of Madness" is full of allusions to Pym's adventures. The novel is printed in the translation of G. Zlobin. Stories included in the collection, demonstrates all facets of the talent of Edgar Poe - an innovator, humorist and master of a sharp plot.
