The Emergence of the Hero. From the History of Russian Emotional Culture in the Late 18th – Early 19th Centuries
29.99 €
The book is devoted to the history of Russian emotional culture of the late 18th and early 19th centuries: a time of competition between the court, Masonic lodges, and literature for the monopoly on "symbolic images of feelings" that educated and Europeanized Russian people had to reproduce in their inner life. The focus of the study is the love and death story of Andrei Ivanovich Turgenev (1781-1803), the author of a confessional diary, a gifted poet, a kind of "pilot copy" of a man of the Romantic era who failed to bring his life and his personality into conformity with the models on which he had been brought up. The detailed reconstruction of this mysterious story is based on the book's understanding of the mechanisms of cultural conditioning of individual experience and the ways of analyzing the emotional experience of an individual.
