Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1469–1536) was a leading scholar of the European Renaissance, a philosopher, and a scholar of biblical texts. He was called the "prince of humanists" and the "oracle of Europe." He left behind a vast epistolary legacy and numerous works devoted to the most pressing issues of the universe. "In Praise of Folly" (1509) is a joke, essentially a trifle, as the author himself admitted, written to pass the time. And yet, it was this work that became Erasmus's most famous. Paradoxical? Or perhaps logical? For this is the greatest mastery of this philosopher, a virtuoso of words and thought—to express in a joke the most important, the most intimate, that which will remain eternal for all time.
