Fertile Land. Paul Klee

"The Fertile Land" is a mysterious country depicted in several paintings by Paul Klee, and an essay of the same name by the French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, dedicated to the mutual influence of music and fine art in the theoretical works and artistic practice of the genius of the European avant-garde. Growing up in a family of a violinist and a singer, Klee was well versed in classical musical forms and used them to solve purely pictorial problems. In his semi-abstract compositions, he often turns to musical notation, draws figures of conductors, singers, non-existent instruments, and in lectures and titles of works he resorts to musical terminology - thus the time period of a fugue becomes the space of a painting. Boulez, in turn, finds support in Klee's art and theory for studying the structure and rhythm of music. This continuous exchange, the transition between music, painting and literature, as well as theoretical rigor and expressive inspiration, becomes, according to Boulez, the fertile ground of any creativity.
