At the heart of The Song of Roland is a genuine historical event connected with the unsuccessful campaign of Charlemagne to Spain in 778. Because of the betrayal of Ganelon, the Breton Count Roland, his loyal friend Olivier, the wise Archbishop of Turpin, as part of a small rearguard detachment, are ambushed in the Ronseval Gorge. Brave warriors are cut off from the army of Charles and forced to enter into a bloody battle with the many times superior forces of the opponents.
The poem became widespread and gave rise to a number of works built around the image of its title character (the poems by M. Boyardo “Roland in Love”, L. Ariosto “Furious Roland”, etc.), and had a significant influence on European literature.
