Fallen Angels: Demonology of Medieval Rus'

Old Russian texts are replete with stories of diabolical machinations and demonic creatures inhabiting both the earth and the underworld. Demons and hybrid monsters were depicted in icons, frescoes, and miniatures. Demonological themes played many roles: they explained the causes of disasters, illustrated biblical and hagiographic texts, helped describe "enemies" or demonize opponents. For centuries, these themes and images gave free rein to the imagination and were imbued with the most unusual details. A new book by historian Dmitry Antonov is the first to explore Old Russian demonology as an entire system of ideas. It examines literature, iconography, and folklore, and how ideas about fallen angels and their earthly "agents" developed and changed in Rus'. The book will be of interest to both humanities scholars (historians, folklorists, cultural scientists, philologists) and a wide range of readers.
