New discontent with memorial culture
9.99 €
In her book, German historian and theorist of cultural memory Aleida Assmann polemizes with those who doubt the value of memorial culture, which, since the 1970s and 1980s, has become the dominant way of dealing with the past. The occasion for this growing "discontent" has been the transformation of the traumatic past into a subject of political and economic bargaining. "The Holocaust industry," the fierce competition for victim status, and the painful attachment to guilt are the most visible manifestations of how contemporary forms of cultural memory work. Partly recognizing the validity of her opponents' position, Aleida Assmann attempts to construct a memorial perspective in which accountability for the crimes committed, an ethical willingness to share guilt, and a legal framework that allows the voices of victims to be heard would make dealing with the past one important factor in consciously moving toward the future.
