Daphne du Maurier's (1907–1989) novel My Cousin Rachel, considered by many critics to be equal to, and in some ways superior to, the celebrated Rebecca, is a fine example of the evolving tradition of the "Gothic" and "sensation" novel, pioneered by Wilkie Collins: detective intrigue meets an unusual love drama, set against the lyrical landscapes of Cornwall and picturesque scenes of Italy in the 1840s. With each plot twist, the reader becomes increasingly unsure whether they are facing a victim of unjust suspicion or a calculating schemer and murderer; but whichever version they choose, the ending will stun them.

Published in 1951, the novel instantly became a bestseller, and just a year later, a film of the same name was released, starring Olivia de Havilland and a young Richard Burton. In 1983, a television series was made based on the novel.
