The young man Suvankul and the girl Tolgonai vow to share happiness and sorrow equally. They do everything together: work in their native field, raise their beloved boys, build a house brick by brick. War exacts its bloody toll from the woman, grinding Tolgonai's men under the millstones of history. Tolgonai mourns, weeping despair and pain to the field, but finds the strength to live on in work, honesty, and the care of her grandmother. Once, she saved a baby from death, nearly dying herself: she carried him in her arms to the doctor across an icy river. Sometimes Tolgonai turns to the field, asking how to reach the heart of every person. The field replies: “You are a Human. You are above all, you are wiser than all! You are a Human! You speak!”
