There are places where the words of novels and poems echo everywhere, and the names of the residents evoke the heroes of world literature. The town of Timpamara has been such a place since a paper mill was built there many years ago.

In the 1960s, an unmarked grave was discovered in the town cemetery, the secret of which was destined to be uncovered by the lame librarian and cemetery keeper, Astolfo Maglinverno.

Like a medieval monk from a novel by Umberto Eco, Maglinverno is fascinated by the stories and mysteries of the universe. A book lover with a vivid imagination, Astolfo blends the plots of novels with the destinies of his fellow villagers—both living and dead—but he is most intrigued by a tombstone with no name or dates, bearing a photograph of a woman. Over time, he decides to unravel the mystery of this face. Astolfo names her Emma Rouault, after the heroine of Flaubert's Madame Bovary. A few months later, he finds a flower in front of Emma's tombstone. What does this mean? The flowers continue to appear until, a few weeks later, Astolfo sees a woman leaving another flower, and to his surprise, it is identical to the image of the mysterious Emma...
