We are so accustomed to the ubiquity and ordinariness of books that we are not surprised when various things appear in front of us in the form of books. The author proposes to take a closer look at how people have learned to appreciate in a book not so much the content as the outer shell, turning books into other objects, making book moulages, decorating interiors with deceptions, using images of books in painting. Before us we have an alternative history of book culture, totaling more than five hundred years. With the invention of the printing press, the book ceases to be a sacredly kept, highly honored object. It is now an anti-reliquary, and sometimes an image of the powerlessness of reason. Society begins to especially value the decorative function, and now the paper book becomes an art object or part of it.
