According to the author of this book, “every story has its own background.” In 1985, Daniel Pennack wandered into a bookstore, where he saw an album with sketches from the life of a dog and was so shocked that he sent the author of the album his book "Dog Dog". So began a long-term correspondence between Pennack and Gabrielle Vincent - a Belgian artist who invented the legendary picture books about the bear Ernest and the mouse Celestine.

Vincent's albums inspired Pennack to write an animated film, which was nominated for an Oscar and won a Cesar Award. In 2012, the film was followed by the book you hold in your hands, The Story of Ernest and Celestine. This is a real novel with a piercing social agenda: about the blatant inequality in society and the opportunity to find a soul despite prohibitions and prejudices.
