Thucydides (c.450 - c.400 BC) was a major ancient Greek historian and military leader, a contemporary, eyewitness and participant in the Peloponnesian War. "History" by Thucydides, one of the most important of the earliest ancient Greek works, focuses on the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC) between Athens and Sparta. This war, which in modern realities would be called a civil war, engulfed the whole of ancient Hellas in the 5th century B.C. and practically ended the flowering of the classical world of ancient Greece. Thucydides was one of the first to apply a strict standard of chronology, recording the events of the war by year, beginning "his work immediately after the outbreak of hostilities, foreseeing that this war would be an important and most remarkable of all those that had gone before".
