The Art of Description. Dutch Painting in the 17th Century

A classic work on European painting by Svetlana Alpers, a renowned American art historian of Russian origin, daughter of the eminent economist and Nobel Prize winner Vasily Leontiev. Alpers' uncontroversial but original and interesting concept is that continental fine art knew two diametrically opposed traditions - Italian and Dutch. The Italians "read" paintings, trying to recognize allegorical, philosophical, or political meanings in the drawing. The Dutch, on the contrary, looked at paintings first of all, so it is impossible to analyze Dutch art without taking into account the history of optical instruments - microscope, lenses, etc. Hence Alpers' heroes become not only Rembrandt and Vermeer, but also Kepler and Huygens. An excellent read, accessible not only to specialists, but in general to anyone interested in the history of European art.
