The book includes two outstanding works by Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837): the novel “Dubrovsky” and “The Tales of Belkin”.
The protagonist of the novel “Dubrovsky” (1833) – Vladimir Dubrovsky – a noble robber. Fate forced him to take a criminal path: he was unjustly convicted by the authorities for arson and murder. Dubrovsky is eager to take revenge on his enemy, the crazy landowner Kirill Troekurov, who brought his father to death and gave false testimony against Dubrovsky in court. Vladimir is hired into Troekurov’s house under the guise of a tutor. However, his plans are not destined to come true: suddenly he falls in love with Troekurov’s daughter – Masha.
“The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin” (1831) consist of 5 stories: “Shot”, “Blizzard”, “The Undertaker”, “Station Caretaker” and “Peasant Girl”. All of them are examples of different literary styles: realism, sentimentalism, and Gothic story, and even vaudeville. “The Tales of Belkin” is a unique work of Russian literature of the XIX century, which opened new horizons of creative development for many famous writers.
