An excerpt from a poem by Ivan Surikov (1841-1880) is familiar to everyone from school years. Surprisingly, it was this fame that played a cruel joke on the work: the first stanzas began to be perceived as an independent work about a funny incident with a village boy - he rolled down a hill and tumbled into the snow to the amusement of his friends. But Surikov's poem is much deeper and more subtle. It is about the pure and cheerful world of childhood. It is about the now almost lost world of the Russian village. It is about the world of fairy tales, a joyful and free childhood dream. All these worlds are lovingly and inspiredly revealed to the little reader in his illustrations by the remarkable St. Petersburg artist Mikhail Bychkov.
