Enchanting Madness. Claude Monet and Water Lilies

By 1914, the noisy battles that marked the birth of a rebellious group of Impressionist painters had long since become history, and the young rebels who provoked them - those of them who had not yet left this world - had become the gray-bearded patriarchs of French painting. Claude Monet, who was 73, settled in Giverny, where he set up his personal garden of paradise with man-made ponds and select lilies. French newspapers informed readers that the celebrated master had retired.
And yet, the newspapers were quick to write Monet off. In spite of personal and world cataclysms, in spite of ill-health, insecurity and solid age, the artist began to realize the most ambitious artistic project for his entire artistic career - a grandiose cycle of landscapes with water lilies.
