Petrov's life is shrouded in myth. Who was this enigmatic man, really? At 20, Yevgeny was the top officer in the Odessa criminal investigation department, the creator of an intelligence network. At 25, he became the author of a bestseller. At 33, he traveled to America with Ilf on assignment from Stalin and Mekhlis. In 1940, he edited the largest Soviet magazine. A brilliant career, and a very strange one. His death is also shrouded in mystery.

Valentin Katayev is considered a cynic and conformist, completely loyal to the Bolshevik regime. But in Soviet literature, one will not find such a consistent proponent of "pure art." He demonstrated loyalty to the authorities, but until Stalin's death, he behaved in such a way that he was not even accepted into the Party. Katayev is a lonely sail on his native Black Sea.
