"Kill me, otherwise you are a murderer." These are the last words Franz Kafka utters, begging his friend, medical student Robert Klopstock, for another dose of morphine. His lifelong companion, Dora Diamant, keeps watch at his bedside, while his sister, Ottla, whom he loves with all her heart, awaits news in Prague.

The novel divides the world into two states—Kafka's life and life after Kafka.

The first, measured section recounts the writer's final years, elaborating on Franz's entire biography. The second section explores the fates of three people close to him. Robert, Dora, and Ottla played a central role in the writer's life, and Kafka's presence and works left an unimaginable mark on their destinies.

Other characters from the Kafka legend are also present: Milena, Max Brod, and, of course, the city of Prague. The story moves from Austro-Hungarian sanatoriums to 1970s New York.

This well-researched study recreates the world as Kafka saw it, based on letters, diaries, and contemporary accounts.
