Up until 1204, when Constantinople was sacked by the Crusaders, the city was famous for its skillful statues dedicated to images of emperors, pagan gods and mythical creatures, but the significance of this sculptural heritage was not appreciated for a long time.

In this book, Professor Paroma Chatterjee offers a new perspective on the subject: she argues that pagan statues were an integral part of Byzantine visual culture, and shows through chronicles, epigrams, and works of fiction that the statues of Constantinople were not only durable and skillfully crafted, but also carried prophetic potential. Professor Chatterjee's book adds to the existing body of literature on Byzantine visual art and offers a new perspective on sacred images and their place in human history.
